During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib), abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations. The fast begins with a pre-dawn meal called Suhoor and ends with Iftar at sunset. Fasting is obligatory for all adult Muslims who are physically able. Exemptions include travelers, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, menstruating women, and those who are ill. Missed fasts should be made up later or compensated with Fidyah (feeding the poor).
