Privacy Policy

Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains what happens to your information when you use Kalem, the iOS app developed by Berk Erdogan ("we", "our", or "us"). Kalem has no user accounts. Its only server is a small relay that passes AI chat requests to OpenAI (see below). Most of what you do in the app stays on your device. Some features must contact outside services to work, and this policy lists each of them.

Summary

• We do not ask for your name, email address, or phone number, and you do not create an account.
• The app shows no advertising and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
• The app does not upload analytics or usage statistics.
• Your chats, bookmarks, reading progress, and memorization progress are stored on your device only.
• Some features send limited data to outside services: the AI chat (OpenAI, through our relay server), prayer times (AlAdhan), and Qur'an text and audio (Quran.com). The details are below.

Information Stored on Your Device

The app stores the following on your device only. We cannot see or access it:

• Your chat conversations. Free users keep the latest 50 conversations, and older ones are deleted automatically. You can delete a single conversation in the app.
• Bookmarks, reading progress, streaks, and completed surahs
• Memorization (Hifz) progress, dhikr counts, and favorite hadith
• Your settings, such as language, notification choices, and prayer calculation method
• Feature usage counters, such as how many AI messages you sent today. These counters are not uploaded.
• Data shown in the home-screen widgets

Settings includes an export of your stats, memorization, dhikr, bookmarks, favorite hadith, and reading progress. The export does not include chat conversations. When you delete the app, iOS deletes all of this data from your device.

Information Sent to Outside Services

AI Chat (OpenAI)

The chat answers questions only from the Qur'an and its published commentary (tafsir), which are included in the app. When you send a question, the app first searches this material on your device. If your question does not match the material closely enough, the app declines to answer, and nothing is sent to OpenAI.

When the question does match, the app sends a request to our relay server at api.kuranai.app, which runs on Cloudflare. The relay passes it on to OpenAI, L.L.C. This request contains:

• The question you typed
• Up to six short excerpts from the commentary included in the app
• Your selected app language

Previous messages in the conversation are not sent. The request does not include your name, email address, location, or any account or device identifier.

Our relay server: from version 2.5.1, the app does not contact OpenAI directly. The relay checks that each request comes from a genuine copy of the app, using Apple's App Attest service. For this, the app creates a cryptographic key on your device and sends the key's identifier with each request. The relay uses this identifier only to check requests and to limit how many requests one copy of the app can send in a minute. The relay forwards your request to OpenAI and does not store your questions or the answers. Cloudflare, which runs the relay, receives your device's IP address in order to deliver the request; OpenAI sees only the relay's address. The relay records an IP address only when a device goes over the request limit, and we do not keep these records. Cloudflare processes this traffic under its own privacy policy. Versions before 2.5.1 connect to OpenAI directly, so OpenAI receives your device's IP address.

Daily reflection: if you have accepted the chat consent, the Today screen asks OpenAI, through the same relay, for a short reflection on the daily verse. This request contains the verse and its translation, the Hijri date, your current reading streak, the number of surahs you have completed, and your app language. It is sent automatically when the Today screen loads, at most about once per day and verse.

Consent: before the first request is sent, the app asks for your permission. If you decline, nothing is sent to OpenAI and all other features stay available. The app does not currently offer a switch to withdraw this consent. You can stop using the chat at any time, and deleting the app removes the consent record.

Prayer Times and Location

With your permission, the app uses your location while you use the app. The app requests an approximate location with about 1 km accuracy.

• Prayer times: your coordinates are sent to the AlAdhan prayer times service (aladhan.com), which calculates the prayer times. After you grant permission, this happens automatically when you open screens that show prayer times, such as Today, Prayer Times, Fasting, and the Ramadan card.
• City name: the app uses Apple's location services to turn your coordinates into a city and country name.
• Qibla: the Qibla direction is calculated on your device.

The app does not save your coordinates. It saves only the resulting prayer times, so the widgets can show them. You can turn location access off at any time in iOS Settings.

Qur'an Text, Search, and Audio

The app loads surahs, verses, translations, and recitation information from the Quran.com API (api.quran.com), and streams recitation audio from verses.quran.com. When you search the Qur'an, your search text is sent to this service. Turkish transliteration is loaded from Açık Kuran (acikkuran.com). These services receive your IP address and the content you request.

Hadith Library

Hadith collections are downloaded from jsDelivr (cdn.jsdelivr.net), with GitHub (raw.githubusercontent.com) as a fallback. The request contains the collection and language only. The collections are cached on your device for up to 7 days.

Apple

• Purchases: subscriptions and purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive your payment details. The app checks your purchase status on your device through Apple's StoreKit.
• Update check: when the app starts or returns to the foreground, it asks Apple's App Store lookup service (itunes.apple.com) for the latest app version. This request contains no personal information.

Permissions

• Location (while using the app): for prayer times and Qibla, as described above.
• Photos (add only): to save share cards to your photo library when you choose to. The app cannot read your photos.
• Notifications: for prayer, reading, and Ramadan reminders. All reminders are scheduled on your device. The app does not use push notifications from a server.

Sharing and Invitations

When you share a verse, a hadith, or an invitation, the app opens the iOS share sheet or the app you choose, such as Messages, WhatsApp, or Instagram. Invitation links contain a random code created on your device. We do not receive the content you share or the people you share it with.

Advertising and Tracking

Kalem shows no advertising, contains no advertising or analytics SDKs, and does not use your device's advertising identifier.

Children's Privacy

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the app has no accounts and does not upload personal data, we hold no personal information about any user.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data, or to object to its processing. Because your app data is stored on your device, you control it directly: you can delete conversations in the app, turn off location access in iOS Settings, and delete the app to remove all of its data.
